Meta Quest 3

Setting up the Guardian

The Guardian feature on the Meta Quest is a built-in safety system that helps you define virtual boundaries within your physical space. This feature will alert you with a visual cue when you get too close to the edges of your designated play area, ensuring a safer VR experience.

Boundary Modes

There are two boundary modes available to suit different usage scenarios:

  1. Stationary Mode
    1. Purpose: Designed for use while sitting or standing in one place
    2. Boundary Area: The default boundary is a square with dimensions of 1 meter by 1 meter (3 feet by 3 feet), centered on your position
    3. Usage: Ideal for seated or standing VR experiences where you do not plan to move around
  1. Roomscale Mode
    1. Purpose: Designed for use while moving around within your physical play area
    2. Boundary Setup: You can draw your own boundaries in the physical space using the Touch controller
    3. Recommended Space: It is recommended to have a safe, unobstructed play area measuring at least 2 meters by 2 meters (6.5 feet by 6.5 feet) for optimal use

Setting up the guardian

  1. Stationary Mode
    1. Simply wear the headset and the system will automatically set up a 1-meter by 1-meter boundary around you
  1. Roomscale Mode
    1. Choose the Roomscale option to begin the boundary setup process
    2. Touch the floor with your controller to set the ground level, then press Confirm
    3. To create your boundary, aim at the floor and press the trigger button (index finger) on your controller to draw your play space
    4. Review the boundary displayed in the headset and press Confirm to finalize the setup

Idea
Tip: If necessary, adjust the boundary by following the instructions to re-draw the area.

Controllers

Meta Button
The Meta button opens the Meta Horizon Managed Services (HMS) interface, Meta's device management solution for Meta Quest devices. HMS allows access to a specific library of training materials and basic settings, limiting access to selected content.

Trigger Button (Pick Up / Use Item)
The trigger button allows interaction with items:
  1. Pick Up: To pick up an item, reach for it and click the trigger button.
  2. Use Item: To use an item, hold the trigger button.
To open doors, hold the trigger button on the door handle, then turn and push/pull it.

Grip Button (Item Interaction)
Pressing and holding in the grip button while having a taser equipped will cause the taser to discharge a shock.

A button and mirrored X button (Teleport)
Hold the A or mirrored X button, aim at the desired location, and release the button to teleport.

B button and Y button (Drop Item)
The B or Y button drops items, but only if an item is held in the corresponding hand.

Joystick (Item Interaction)
The joystick is used to interact with specific items held:
  1. Nozzle: Turn the joystick left and right to adjust the nozzle head
  2. Taser: Turn the joystick left and right to put the taser in and out of safety; press the joystick button down to release the cartridge in the taser
Handtracking

Hand tracking on the Meta Quest allows users to interact with the virtual environment using their hands instead of controllers. The system uses built-in sensors and cameras to detect and interpret hand movements and gestures in real-time, enabling natural interactions such as pinching, pointing, and grabbing.

While Academy and Elementary do not currently support hand tracking, Life Saver, which comes included with the Elementary case, does use this feature, offering a controller-free interaction experience.

3D Printed Nozzle 2026

Attaching the controller:

Step 1: Unlock the Nozzle Mount

Locate the dial on the front of the nozzle. Turn the dial until the indicator lines up with the unlocked padlock icon.

You will hear and feel a click when the mount is fully unlocked.

Step 2: Position the Mount

Above the dial, you will see a mounting bracket with an opening for the controller.

Hold the mount firmly and slide it toward the front of the nozzle until it stops. Once it has reached the furthest position, rotate the mount counterclockwise.

Step 3: Insert the Right Controller

Take the Right Meta Quest 3 controller and insert the bottom of the controller into the opening on the mount.

Make sure the controller buttons are facing toward the back of the nozzle.

Tip: Removing the controller strap before installation can make insertion easier.

Step 4: Secure the Controller in Place

Follow these steps to lock the controller securely into the mount:

  1. Hold the controller firmly in place inside the mount.
  2. Rotate the mount clockwise until it returns to its original position.
  3. Slide the mount back toward the rear of the nozzle until it is fully seated.
  4. Turn the front dial from the unlocked padlock icon to the locked padlock icon.
  5. Confirm the dial clicks into place to ensure the controller is securely locked.
